Tennessee Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Program Technical Assessment

This document, a collaboration of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDSHS), the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), and the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) as well as a wide variety of other agencies, offers a review of highway safety programs and makes recommendations for improving these programs to reduce deaths, injuries,
and economic and property losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. Bike Walk Tennessee was proud to contribute to the development of this report through the participation of Bike Walk Knoxville representatives. 

League of American Bicyclists Bike Friendly State Report - Tennessee

The Bicycle Friendly State from the League of American Bicyclists program promotes awareness, best practices, and action by state Departments of Transportation and state legislatures. It is structured around a ranking of all 50 states based upon publicly available data and a survey completed by state Departments of Transportation and/or state bicycle advocacy organizations. This data is used to rank and create a report card for each state.

Safe Routes Partnership State Report Cards - Tennessee

The Safe Routes Partnership developed state report cards which provide a snapshot of how supportive each state is of walking, bicycling, and physical activity for children and adults as of 2022. The report cards primarily look at state policy, focusing on four key areas: Complete Streets and Active Transportation Policy and Planning, Federal and State Active Transportation Funding, Safe Routes to School Funding and Supportive Practices, and Active Neighborhoods and Schools.

Smart Growth America Dangerous By Design Report

The Smart Growth America Dangerous By Design Report illustrates the ways in which our nation’s streets are dangerous by design, designed primarily to move cars quickly at the expense of keeping everyone safe. It utilizes federal data and includes rankings for states and metropolitan areas. 

Benchmarking Project

The Benchmarking Project is a project of the League of American Bicyclists and the CDC’s Active People, Healthy Nation initiative. It continues work started by the Alliance for Biking and Walking in 2007, and published through six editions of physical reports. This ongoing project is intended to be a guide to publicly available data on bicycling and walking, and the public policy that supports creating a healthy, active America through bicycling and walking. 

State of Our State: Transportation and Mobility

This report from ThinkTennessee compiles data on the current state of Tennessee’s transportation infrastructure and its impact on Tennesseans, highlights the most urgent transportation needs and offers recommendations of evidence-based policies that can address these challenges. The Changing Lanes: Investing in Multimodal Transportation Options Will Improve Outcomes for Tennesseans policy brief provides a summary of ThinkTennessee's key findings and recommendations.

TDOT VRU Safety Assessment

The Tennessee Vulnerable Road User (VRU) Safety Assessment is a comprehensive initiative aimed at understanding the factors contributing to the increasing number of VRU crashes in Tennessee.

Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation

The Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation promotes cycling, through advocacy and education, as a safe and healthy form of recreation and transportation. We are increasing awareness of the Jeff Roth/Brian Brown Protection Act of 2007 and promoting a harmonious relationship between motorists and cyclists, as the number of commuting cyclists are ever increasing in our state of Tennessee and our country.

League of American Bicyclists

For generations past and to come, the League of American Bicyclists represents bicyclists in the movement to create safer roads, stronger communities, and a Bicycle Friendly America. Through education, advocacy and promotion, the League works to celebrate and preserve the freedom cycling brings to League members everywhere.
